Omega Centauri, however, has recently been shown to contain two distinct stellar populations of red and blue stars. The blue stars in particular, which make up over 25% of the cluster, are actually higher in metal content than their red counterparts and contain up to 40% Helium, the highest figure found in any cluster so far. 3. A typical globular cluster HR diagram. novae, which has led to the formation of younger blue stars from this metal rich material. Globular clusters seem to be contained in two distinct areas: the disc group, which are closer to the galactic center; and the halo group that lie in the outer fringes of our Galaxy.

All these groups are situated in or near the constellations main “W” or “M” asterism. Cepheus has 4 OB associations, Cep OB1, OB2, OB3, and OB4. The brightest member is Cep OB2, situated near the star nu Cephei. 5! The Cygnus OB-2 association has recently been found to be emitting extremely strong unidentified gamma rays, probably caused by stellar winds from interaction within the young cluster stars. This could be a source of the elusive cosmic rays, but further studies will be required to confirm this.

This study used white dwarf stars, as these are at the end of their lives so and are some of the oldest stars within the cluster. 4 solar masses, and they no longer burn energy because they are in the process of cooling down. The temperature of a cooling star can also yield data that can be used to age it. Astronomers, therefore, use the oldest white dwarfs which appear the faintest and coolest, and the results of this project are now in, which produces a figure of 12–13 billion years for the Universe.
