Stramenopiles Stramenopiles (Heterokontophyta) are soil, marine, and freshwater autotrophs and heterotrophs. They are characterized by having a so-called tinsel flagellum with “hairs” made of a basal attachment, a hollow shaft, and glyco protein filaments split into three parts at the ends. A second smooth whiplash flagellum also is often present. There are three groups of autotrophic stramenopiles: diatoms, the golden algae (which are not well represented in marine environments), and the brown algae.

See Appendix A for definitions of terms, clades, and taxa in this figure. 28 A Photographic Atlas of Marine Biology specialized structural functions) and pinocytotic micropores (small openings for taking in dissolved substances, generally nutrients, from the environment) on the cell s urface. Molecular evidence shows strong support for the diverse Alveolata clade. Currently, the relationships between ciliate taxa are based predominantly upon cilia variation and molecular evidence. Ciliophora is probably one of the most complex groups of microscopic unicellular organisms, with an estimated 7,500–9,000 extant species found in aquatic, marine, and terrestrial habitats.

Many dinoflagellates house endosymbiotic brown algae. If the dinoflagellate is armored (thecate), alveoli immediately beneath the cell membrane house cellulose plates (thecae). The number of thecae is consistent in many species. Some species are naked and the vesicles do not contain cellulose plates. On a gross cellular level, the girdle marks the separation of the anterior epitheca (epi—upon, theca—case) and the posterior hypotheca (hypo—below) portions of the cell (these are also referred to as valves).
